Teacher of the Year

 Melissa Faetz

On Thursday, Dec. 19th, Melissa Faetz (John & Teresa Knippel’s daughter) was named North Carolina’s Region 8 Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014. One of nine regional winners, Melissa is a first grade teacher at South Macon Elementary School, where she has taught for 10 years.
Melissa was presented the award by current Teacher of the Year, Karyn Dickerson. In her speech, Ms. Dickerson noted that students say about Melissa that “she encourages you, but she doesn’t do it for you” and “she’s not like an old person, she’s like a kid;” parents say, “for the first time, my daughter is excited to go to school; and coworkers say, “she can connect with any kid.”
Melissa said, “Thank you… I’m so blessed to have been working at this school for the 10 years that I’ve been here, and I’ve learned so much from everybody here.”

The Foundation has also presented Melissa with a scholarship award in recogination of her Portuguese roots and multi-cultural personality.
